Iskandar welcomes 2011 budget allocation

ISKANDAR Malaysia will continue to prosper with a conducive business environment and better infrastructure following the RM339 million allocation as announced in the Budget 2011 recently.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive Ismail Ibrahim (picture) said the allocation was in the right direction as Irda was overseeing various infrastructure developments, in line with its effort to enhance the business environment and provide quality life for the people.

For Johor Baru residents, the most visible on-going highway projects are the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL), Johor Baru coastal highway, and upgrading of the Middle Ring Road.


Broadband expansion in Iskandar Malaysia

More property development projects in Iskandar Malaysia will be equipped with the high-speed broadband (HSBB UniFi) services within the next two to three years.

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) Johor general manager Mohd Roslan Mohd Rashidi said the company would be signing service agreements with 19 more developers in Iskandar until end of next year.

He said they would be joining Mudra Tropika Sdn Bhd and Dynasty View Sdn Bhd who signed similar agreements to provide HSBB network and services for their property buyers.

“Presently, 2,000 premises in Iskandar have access to HSBB UniFi and the figure is expected to increase to 120,000 by 2013,” said Mohd Roslan.


UEM Land courts local investors to help develop Nusajaya

Besides targeting foreign investors, UEM Land Holdings Bhd wants to attract more local investors to participate in the development of Nusajaya.

Its Nusajaya project director Zulkifli Tahmali said investors could buy land in Nusajaya and develop it themselves or team up with the company in joint-venture projects.

However, UEM Land would not embark on a project if the potential partner was also involved in property development, he said.

“The best example is our collaboration with Malaysian Biotechnology Corp Bhd (BiotechCorp) in developing BioXCell, a biotech park project,” Zulkifli told StarBiz at the launch of the company’s newest housing project Nusa Bayu here recently.


Government Allocates RM850 Million For Corridor And Regional Development

The government is allocating RM850 million for infrastructure support to accelerate corridor and regional development, focusing on several clusters with specialisation and geographical advantages.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that efforts to develop the corridors will focus on joint venture projects between local and foreign investors as well as high impact industries with competitive advantage.

For Iskandar Malaysia, a sum of RM339 million is allocated, including for construction of highways, development of housing areas, and providing and improving public transportation services.


UniFi for 19 projects in Johor

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) will next year sign service agreements with 19 property developers in Johor to provide high-speed broadband (HSBB UniFi) services in their projects.

TM Johor general manager Mohd Roslan Mohd Rashidi said all 19 projects were located within Iskandar Malaysia in greenfield areas where it would be easier to lay the HSBB infrastructure instead of brownfield areas or places that were already developed.

“Presently, 2,000 premises within Iskandar have access to HSBB UniFi and the figure is expected to increase to 120,000 by 2013,” he told a press conference after an agreement signing between TM and UMLand Bhd subsidiary Dynasty View Sdn Bhd for the provision of HSBB UniFi services in Taman Seri Austin.


Iskandar Malaysia tingkatkan tawaran perniagaan

JOHOR BAHRU: Iskandar Malaysia akan terus meningkatkan persekitaran perniagaan serta melakukan reformasi menerusi peruntukan RM339 juta seperti diumumkan melalui Bajet 2011.

Ketua Eksekutif Pihak Berkuasa Wilayah Pembangunan Iskandar (IRDA), Ismail Ibrahim, berkata bajet itu satu petanda baik kepada rakyat dalam usaha awal pihak kerajaan untuk meningkatkan kualiti kehidupan rakyat terutama golongan berpendapatan rendah.

Katanya, peruntukan membabitkan pembinaan jalan raya, pembangunan kawasan perumahan serta meningkatkan kegunaan pengangkutan awam berkenaan jelas dapat memberikan banyak manfaat kepada masyarakat umum tanpa mengira bangsa dan agama.


Bajet 2011: Terima kasih diberi tumpuan

Kerajaan negeri berterima kasih kepada Kerajaan Pusat atas tumpuan yang diberikan terhadap negeri ini dalam Bajet 2011 yang memperuntukkan sebanyak RM6 bilion bagi membolehkan Iskandar Malaysia berkembang mengikut landasan yang ditetapkan.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman berkata, peruntukan itu membolehkan Iskandar Malaysia memberi tumpuan dari segi pertumbuhan dalam bidang minyak dan gas serta industri hiliran berkaitan.

"Iskandar Malaysia juga mendapat sokongan berterusan dengan peruntukan RM339 juta untuk meningkatkan kemudahan infrastruktur dan pengangkutan awamnya," katanya dalam satu kenyataan di sini, semalam.

Johor thanks the Federal Government for its unwavering support to further develop Iskandar Malaysia in Budget 2011.

Iskandar will receive RM339mil for infrastructure projects such as construction of highways and improve road connectivity within the 2,217 sq km growth corridor.

Apart from the infrastructure projects, the allocation would also be used to develop housing areas as well as provide and improve transportation services.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman who is the co-chairman of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the continuous support reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure the success of Iskandar.

Raffles plans to set up campus in Iskandar

Raffles Education Corp Ltd, the largest private education provider in the Asia-Pacific region, will collaborate with Education@Iskandar Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Iskandar Investment Bhd, to determine the feasibility of establishing a multi-institutional education campus in Iskandar Malaysia.

In a statement yesterday, it said the development would be known as Raffles University Iskandar and would include the launch of Raffles University as part of its first phase of development.

The proposed Raffles University would be developed on a 26-ha site and would offer a range of undergraduate programmes. The university would enrol about 5,000 students within its first five years.

Private education provider Raffles Education said it is determining the feasibility of a multi-institutional education campus in Iskandar, Malaysia. 

It is collaborating with a subsidiary of Iskandar Investment Berhad, Education@Iskandar, and the joint development will be known as Raffles University Iskandar. 

The proposed university will be developed on a 65-acre plot of land and will offer undergraduate programmes including business, technology, health science and social science specialisations. 

It aims to enrol about 5,000 students within its first five years.

RAFFLES Education Corporation (REC) is looking to extend its ties with Malaysian state investor Khazanah Nasional with a possible collaboration on a multi-institutional education campus in Iskandar Malaysia.

The school operator said yesterday that it is looking to work with a Khazanah subsidiary, Education@Iskandar, to set up a campus - to be known as Raffles University Iskandar - through a joint venture. It did not provide an investment figure for the proposed joint venture.


Johor expects RM50b investments in oil and gas

The state is confident of attracting more than RM50bil in foreign direct investments (FDI) in the oil and gas sector by 2013.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said, despite suffering from the economic downturn last year, the state’s decision to focus on the sector had garnered positive feedback.

More than 10 multinational companies had set up operations worth over RM4bil and created 4,000 jobs here, he said during the official opening of Langsat Terminal (One) in Pasir Gudang here.

The state was improving the region’s viability by upgrading access and connectivity by building the Senai-Desaru Highway and a second highway connecting Desaru to Kuantan, he added.


Johor oil storage terminal to expand

While oil storage is highly sought after in Singapore, the newly opened Johor storage terminal is going to expand, in an attempt to catch more business from Singapore-based oil traders. 

The RM500 million (€54 million) Langsat terminal is to invest an additional RM90 million and develop a further 80,000 m3. 

Langsat terminal chairman Ngau Boon Keat said that plans were also underway regarding the construction of another 170,000m3 of storage capacity for the terminal, but an investment figure was not given. 

As the Langsat terminal is currently used mainly by oil trader Trafigura, Keat went on to say, ‘We are also planning to acquire more land for the construction of more tankage facilities for other customers as well.’ 


Johor oil storage terminal plans RM90m expansion

Langsat Terminal inaugurates first phase of RM500m tankage project WITH continuing strong demand and limited supply of oil storage in Singapore, a newly-opened Johor oil storage terminal yesterday announced further expansion plans to try to capture terminalling business from Singapore-based oil traders.

Langsat Terminal, operated by Dialog Group, MISC and oil trader Trafigura at Tanjung Langsat, said it is investing a further RM90 million (S$37.3 million) to develop a third phase of 80,000 cubic metres, adding to the RM500 million investment in the first two completed phases of a total 400,000 cu m of storage.


10 Multinationals Invest RM4 Billion In Tanjung Langsat

The Tanjung Langsat Industrial Complex has attracted 10 multinationals and their investments totalling RM4 billion create more than 4,000 employment opportunites for the local population.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman revealed this Monday at the launch of Langsat Terminal (One) Sdn Bhd (LgT-1).

LgT-1, a joint-venture tank terminal project between Dialog Group Bhd, MISC Bhd and Puma Energy Asia BV whose holding company is Trafigura Beheer BV, is located within the vicinity of Tanjung Langsat Port in Pasir Gudang.

The addition of LgT-1 to the Langsat Industrial Complex, Ghani said, would boost the state government's effort to develop Southeast Johor as the next regional oil and gas hub.

Scientex acquires Johline Realty for RM65mil

PETALING JAYA: Scientex Bhd, via wholly-owned subsidiary Scientex Quatari Sdn Bhd, has entered into a share sale agreement with Binaik Equity Bhd to acquire the entire issued and paid-up capital of Johline Realty Sdn Bhd for RM65.3mil cash.

Scientex is an industrial packaging and property developer company while Johline’s main activities are property development and investment holding.

Scientex told Bursa Malaysia yesterday the proposed acquisition was in line with the plan to expand its landbank in strategic locations for its future property development and expansion in Pasir Gudang, Kulai and Iskandar Malaysia in Johor.

Second theme park for Iskandar

GELANG PATAH: A second theme park, after Legoland, is coming up in Iskandar Malaysia.

It will be a 5,574 square metre indoor park meant to delight children below 12-years-old, said Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

He said the park would be in Puteri Harbour, a waterfront, mixed development project in Nusajaya.

It will be a joint-venture betweeen UEM Land Holdings Bhd and a foreign investor.

“Work will probably take place next year,” Ghani said at a Hari Raya open house organised by Taman Nusantara developer, Denia Development Sdn Bhd.

Ghani declined to divulge the investment cost or who the foreign investor was. The Star, however, learnt that the investor was WalMart Group, a US-based conglomerate.  


Road transport the focus at Iskandar

THE Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) is focusing on road transport development, especially bus services, which forms part of the 32 development blueprints of the southern growth corridor.

Its chief executive officer Harun Johari said road transport was an important component of the integrated public transport master plan which covered air, rail and sea transport.

He said the bus service master plan would be ready by the end of the year.

"We will have buses of international standing as well as more bus routes and services. 

"This is to live up to the expectation of a metropolis.

"Currently, our bus service is not quite adequate and this is one area we are focusing on."


FDI inflow into Iskandar's first phase may top target

ISKANDAR Malaysia in Johor could surpass the US$13 billion (RM44 billion) foreign direct investment target for its first phase of development due to fresh investment interest from Hong Kong, South Korea and Europe.

To date, the economic zone has received 92 per cent, or US$11 billion, of the targeted amount in the first phase of investment.

"We have a lot of foreign developers and investors who have expressed surprise that we are not better known.

"They said Iskandar Malaysia is Asia's best-kept secrets. We can expect Iskandar Malaysia to have a new wave of investments next year," Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) managing director Arlida Ariff told Business Times in an interview.


PolymerLatex opens RM250m plant in Johor

Germany's PolymerLatex GmbH, a maker of synthetic rubber, has opened its largest and first plant outside of Europe in Pasir Gudang, Johor.
 
The RM250 million plant is expected to produce 100,000 tonnes of nitrile latex a year and to have estimated annual turnover of US$110 million (RM373 million).

PolymerLatex Sdn Bhd managing director and chief executive officer R. Vinny Bhalla said the company has transferred its overall operation from Germany to the new plant.

Synthetic latex is used to make anything from rubber gloves to tyres and carpets.

PolymerLatex's existing plants are in Germany, Italy and Finland. It closed a plant in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, in the UK earlier this year.

(DUBAI) Malaysia's Iskandar Investment Berhad secured five billion dirhams (S$1.91 billion) investment for the country's Iskandar zone, and is accelerating work on what is planned to be the country's largest economic zone.

Chief executive Arlida Ariff told Reuters in an interview that there were no cancellations within the project and the total investment for Malaysia Iskandar zone since its launch in 2006 had reached US$13 billion, with around 15 per cent coming from Middle Eastern investors.

The investments are in areas of property, hospitality, retail, manufacturing and petrochemicals.
